The SCORA X-Change 2024, themed “Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights with Cultural Sensitivity,” brought together medical students, healthcare professionals, and advocates from around the world to address pressing issues such as adolescent pregnancy, unsafe abortion, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and gender-based violence (GBV). This international gathering served as a platform for participants to share knowledge, experiences, and innovative solutions to these critical health challenges.

Medical Doctors for Choice (MDFC) participated in a panel discussion on the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences when providing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services. MDFC emphasized the need to understand the specific cultural backgrounds of the communities served to deliver effective SRHR interventions. They highlighted challenges in addressing SRHR in culturally diverse populations, such as resistance from cultural beliefs and misinformation. MDFC suggested that engaging with the community, offering culturally appropriate education, and collaborating with local leaders can help build trust and encourage acceptance of SRHR services.

The key takeaways from the event included the importance of cultural sensitivity in SRHR services and the need to tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of diverse groups. For future healthcare providers, building cultural competency, actively listening to communities, and adapting approaches to fit cultural contexts are essential strategies for success. MDFC’s participation highlighted how culturally sensitive approaches can improve the accessibility and effectiveness of SRHR services.

The SCORA X-Change 2024 provided valuable insights for healthcare providers in Rwanda and beyond, demonstrating that integrating cultural understanding into SRHR services is crucial for improving health outcomes and fostering trust within diverse communities.
