From November 6 to 7, 2024, Kigali became the vibrant heart of SRHR advocacy as it hosted the AmplifyChange Convention. Bringing together passionate organizations from Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the convention served as a vital space for collaboration, reflection, and strategizing among changemakers committed to advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. This was an inspiring opportunity for Medical Doctors for Choice (MDFC) to stand alongside fellow advocates, share our experiences, and gain invaluable insights to drive our mission forward.
The event provided a unique platform for grantee partners to celebrate successes, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities for collaboration. MDFC shared our ongoing efforts to expand access to safe abortion services, emphasizing the importance of engaging communities and empowering healthcare providers to combat stigma. Listening to the powerful stories of resilience and triumph from other organizations reaffirmed that, despite our unique struggles, we are united in a shared vision for a more equitable future.
Throughout the convention, participants engaged in meaningful discussions about the evolving landscape of SRHR advocacy. Guided sessions encouraged open dialogue on pressing issues such as the need for stronger community support, deeper government engagement, and more sustainable funding models. These conversations challenged us to think critically about our strategies and provided valuable perspectives that we could integrate into our work.
A highlight of the event was the collaborative stakeholder mapping exercise, which invited participants to explore key players and potential allies across the region. This activity revealed significant opportunities for building strategic partnerships to amplify our collective voice. By identifying gaps and charting pathways to collaboration, we deepened our understanding of the regional SRHR landscape and left with a clearer vision of strengthening our impact through united efforts.
Despite the challenges faced by the SRHR movement—ranging from restrictive policies to cultural resistance—the convention fostered an atmosphere of hope and determination. Participants shared innovative solutions and practical approaches to overcome barriers, leaving the event with renewed energy and actionable strategies to effect change in their communities. The stories shared and the connections formed during these two days underscored the transformative power of collaboration and unity.
As the convention concluded, MDFC reflected on the wealth of knowledge and inspiration gained. The camaraderie and shared purpose among all participants reignited our commitment to advancing SRHR in Rwanda and beyond. We are grateful to AmplifyChange for creating this powerful space and to the facilitators for guiding us through such meaningful conversations.
Leaving the convention, MDFC felt more determined than ever to integrate the lessons learned into our advocacy efforts. With new ideas, strengthened connections, and a deeper understanding of the challenges ahead, we are ready to continue pushing for transformative change. This gathering was a testament to the strength of a united movement and a reminder that together, we can create a future where SRHR is a reality for all.
